【story】
Saichi Sugimoto (Kento Yamazaki), a former soldier who returned from the Russo-Japanese War and is known as "Immortal Sugimoto," learns of the existence of a vast amount of gold stolen from the Ainu people. The man who stole the gold, known as "Noppera-bo," hid it just before being captured, and after being imprisoned in Abashiri Prison, tattooed the location of the gold onto the bodies of 24 prisoners, allowing them to escape. The tattoos, when combined, form a single code. Around this time, Sugimoto meets Asirpa (Anna Yamada), an Ainu girl. Asirpa's father was killed by the gold thieves, and she joins forces with Sugimoto to uncover the truth of the incident. Also after the gold is Lieutenant Tsurumi (Hiroshi Tamaki) of the Imperial Japanese Army's 7th Division, who aims to conquer Hokkaido in remembrance of his division members who fought bravely in the Russo-Japanese War but were not rewarded for their efforts. And then there's another one, Toshizo Hijikata (Hiroshi Tachi), the "Demon Vice-Commander" of the Shinsengumi, who was supposed to have died in the Boshin War.
To fulfill their respective missions, a three-way battle erupts between Sugimoto, Tsurumi's 7th Division, and Hijikata Toshizo in a fight for the tattooed prisoner! As the battle intensifies, testimony emerges that "Noppera-bo" is Asirpa's father, Wilk... To verify the truth, Sugimoto heads to Abashiri with Asirpa.
Who is friend and who is foe...? Amidst a clash of various motives, the battle finally moves to the impenetrable fortress of Abashiri Prison, where the faceless man who holds the key to all the mysteries is imprisoned.
