[Synopsis]
In the mid-18th century, Edo's population exceeded one million and, during a time of great peace, it developed into one of the world's largest cities.
Tsutaju, also known as Tsutaya Juzaburo, was born into a poor commoner's family in Yoshiwara, on the outskirts of Edo. He was separated from his parents at a young age and adopted by the Hikite-chaya teahouse.
Tsutaeshige, who was raised in a community of people that went beyond blood ties, started out as a rental bookstore owner and then went on to start a book editing and publishing business.
At the same time, Edo culture flourished in the free atmosphere created by the powerful man of the time, Tanuma Okitsugu, and a diverse range of writers such as Hiraga Gennai emerged.
Tsutae had close connections with cultural figures such as Houseidou Kisanji, and produced a string of hit books with lavish illustrations in the form of "kibyoshi."
At the age of 33, he set up a shop in the commercial center of Nihonbashi, and rose to become the "publishing king of Edo."
The talents that Tsutae discovered were young, unique talents such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Santo Kyoden, Katsushika Hokusai, Kyokutei Bakin, and Jippensha Ikku.
Many of them would later become masters and lay the foundations of Japanese culture.
However, times changed and Tanuma Okitsugu was ousted. In his place, Matsudaira Sadanobu came to power during the Kansei Reforms, and Tsutae's freedom and political satire became problematic.
He was punished by having half of his property confiscated. Some of his neighbors were banished from Edo or even killed.
Tsutae continues to face relentless oppression from the shogunate, but he remains steadfast in his anti-authority stance and continues to fight with the power of his brush.
With his life on the line, Tsutae devises "Sharaku," a spectacular form of entertainment that can never be taken away...
