【story】
Tucked away in a back alley in a busy downtown area, under the twinkling neon lights of the city, Meshiya is known as the "Midnight Diner." Open from midnight until 7 a.m., the restaurant is small and only serves a counter-style menu, with only a pork miso soup set meal and alcoholic beverages. However, the owner (Kobayashi Kaoru) promises to "make whatever he can" as long as he has the ingredients, and night after night, a diverse group of customers flock in for the delicious food and comfortable atmosphere. On this spring night, the regulars all show up dressed in mourning attire, creating a somewhat damp atmosphere inside Meshiya. Then, another customer, a woman dressed in mourning, arrives. However, Noriko (Kawai Aoba), an editor at a publishing company, is an unusual woman who, when stressed at work builds up, dresses up in mourning and heads out into the city to refresh herself, then finishes off with a yakiniku set meal at Meshiya. One day, a veteran writer she was working on suddenly dies, and at the wake, she meets a middle-aged man, Ishida (Sato Koichi). I was drawn to its bitter, sophisticated charm...
Time passes and it's summer. One night, Seiko (Kimura Midoriko), the proprietress of the local soba restaurant "Soba Sei," comes to visit. Since losing her husband 17 years ago, she has been running the restaurant and raising her only son, Seita (Ikematsu Sosuke). Although Seita helps out at the restaurant with deliveries and other things, she still treats him like a child, as he frequents the table tennis parlor whenever he has free time. Meanwhile, as Seita slurps down his favorite fried udon noodles, he is troubled by the fact that he cannot bring himself to tell Seiko, who will not let go of her, that he wants to marry his girlfriend Saori (Kojima Kiyoshi), who is 15 years older than him...
In the fall, Yukiko (Watanabe Misako) comes from Kyushu at the request of her son, who is in financial trouble. She says she has entrusted a large sum of money to a man who is her son's colleague, but when the regulars at Meshiya hear her story, they worry that it might be a "come-and-go scam." However, Yukiko herself doesn't seem to care much, munching on her pork miso soup set meal with gusto, as if it were nothing to her. Seeing her behavior, the regulars become concerned and ask Officer Kogure at the police station to contact Yukiko's house. When her brother-in-law Tetsuro (Igawa Hisashi) comes to pick her up and tells her about her situation, the unexpected truth becomes clear... Then, on New Year's Eve, the usual regulars arrive in groups of three or five to spend the New Year at Meshiya...
Throughout the year, customers with a bit of a story show up, soothe their hearts with the nostalgic flavors prepared by the master, fill their stomachs, soothe their souls, and take a step towards a new tomorrow.
