The drama "Fragile" is based on the manga of the same name currently being serialized in "Afternoon" (Kodansha). It has always ranked highly in the popularity rankings of readers of "Afternoon", and the five volumes of the manga that have been published since November 2014 have sold a total of 550,000 copies (as of March 2016), making it one of the most popular manga series today.
The protagonist of "Fragile" is a pathologist, a medical specialist, akin to an internist or surgeon. By examining cells and tissues under a microscope and even performing autopsies on deceased patients, pathologists uncover the causes and mechanisms of disease. At the same time, they are responsible for scientifically determining diagnoses for patients based on findings derived from analyzed data. Given their role, a pathologist's diagnostic error can directly affect a patient's life. Despite this, pathologists account for only 0.7% of physicians in Japan, and hospitals often have only one pathologist. Therefore, unlike the United States, where pathologists are assigned to specific organs, Japanese pathologists must be responsible for all organs, requiring extensive interdisciplinary knowledge and the ability to make pathological diagnoses of all cells and tissues.
Pathologist Kishi (Nagase Tomoya) never wears a white coat and always wears a suit. Despite being handsome, he is eccentric and sharp-tongued. His blunt way of speaking only makes him enemies. He is aware of his bad personality, and if his diagnosis conflicts with that of another doctor, he will completely refute it, fighting to the death until the other doctor surrenders.
But at the core of his being, he has no desire for his own fame, and remains unwavering in his belief that what a doctor should value most is medical justice and the lives of his patients. In fact, since Kishi took up his post, the hospital's reputation has improved dramatically. The other doctors describe Kishi as "a very eccentric, but extremely talented," and although his skills as a doctor are exceptionally competent, they want to avoid him as much as possible. However, in order to save his patients' lives and for the medical justice he believes in, Kishi is willing to cause any friction with those around him, and so begins his battle!
