【story】
The culprit was caught. The truth remained at large.
Director Hirokazu Kore-eda takes on the <truth> that lies beyond the deepest darkness---A suspense masterpiece that will go down in Japanese film history is now available on Blu-ray & DVD.
It was supposed to be an ordinary trial. Misumi (Koji Yakusho), who had a prior conviction for murder, was indicted for killing and setting fire to the factory president who had fired him. He confessed to the crime, and the death penalty seemed almost certain. Shigemori (Fukuyama Masaharu) was assigned to defend him. As a lawyer who treated trials as a business, he began his investigation in an attempt to somehow get a life sentence. Something was wrong. As the investigation progressed, a sense of unease grew within Shigemori. Misumi's testimony changed every time they met. Even his motive. Why did he kill? Did he really kill? Was he being consumed by the enigmatic Misumi? A lawyer who believed that truth wasn't necessary for defense began to genuinely desire to know the truth for the first time. Eventually, the connection between Misumi and the victim's daughter, Sakie (Suzu Hirose), was revealed, and new facts began to emerge.
