[Synopsis]
Sagawa village, Tosa, in 1867 at the end of the Edo period. Mantaro was born as the long-awaited heir to the wealthy sake brewery Mineya. Although he loved plants and had a cheerful personality, he was a frail child. His mother, Hisa, died of illness when he was young, and he was raised by his grandmother, Taki. Taki sends Mantaro to Meikyokan, an academic school where children of samurai families attend, in order to raise him as a worthy heir to a prestigious family, but he cannot fit in with the sons of samurai families and refuses to go to school. However, when he learns about the mysterious ecology of plants from Renko Ikeda, the head of the school, he discovers the joy of learning. After that, it is decided that Mineya's sake will be exhibited at an exposition in Tokyo, so 18-year-old Mantaro goes to Tokyo, the capital of flowers, with Takeo as the head of the family. At the exposition, he has a fateful encounter with Hisaeko, the daughter of a confectionery shop, and is greatly inspired by a visit to botanists Noda and Satonaka, whom he has admired since childhood. When Mantaro returned to Kochi, he stopped studying plants and promised to live as the head of a mine shop, but John Manjiro, whom he happened to meet, told him, ``Life is short, so don't have any regrets,'' and he devoted himself to the path of botany. He expressed his desire to do so to Taki.
